Beyond Stillness reimagines a quiet encounter with a young Little Blue Heron resting aboard a weathered boat at the edge of the water. Rooted in original wildlife photography, the composition moves beyond the captured moment, blending photographic detail with painterly texture, layered color and contemporary abstraction.

Deep indigo and slate blues meet copper, terracotta, soft blush and warm ivory, creating an atmospheric interpretation of water, light and landscape. The heron remains a quiet focal point while the world around it shifts between realism and abstraction—as though the refuge itself is being remembered rather than simply observed.

The result is a contemplative mixed-media work about the subtle movement that surrounds a moment of rest.

Beyond Stillness is designed to stand beautifully on its own while also serving as a companion to the original photography print, Stillness in the Refuge.

The Story Behind the Art

Some moments ask to be documented. Others invite us to return to them.

The original photograph behind Beyond Stillness captured the peaceful presence of a young Little Blue Heron perched on a boat, quietly overlooking the water. In this mixed-media interpretation, that photographic moment becomes the foundation for something more expressive.

The familiar scene gives way to layers of color and texture inspired by the changing character of water and reflected light. Photography preserves what was there; abstraction explores what the moment felt like.

Together, Stillness in the Refuge and Beyond Stillness offer two perspectives on the same encounter—one observed, one reimagined.

Design Notes

The original wildlife photography featured in Beyond Stillness was captured by Framed Greetings artist Antoinette Washington at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge in Sherman, Texas.

The Little Blue Heron and elements of its environment provide the photographic foundation of the work. The image is then transformed through mixed-media techniques that introduce painterly surfaces, abstract forms and layered textures while preserving the recognizable character of the original encounter.

A palette of indigo, slate blue, copper, terracotta, blush and warm ivory brings a contemporary warmth to the natural landscape. Rather than reproducing the refuge literally, the mixed-media treatment interprets its atmosphere—water, reflection, light and quiet movement.
