On a quiet December evening inside Myakka River State Park, two birds cut across the water with impossible precision—wings wide, beaks grazing the surface as they searched for their next catch. For just a second, the fading light caught them perfectly, reflecting across the rippling water like liquid gold.

That fleeting moment became the foundation for Skimming Light, a mixed media wildlife artwork that transforms a rare natural encounter into a dramatic visual experience.

At the heart of the piece are two Black Skimmers, remarkable birds known for their unique hunting style—gliding just inches above the water while their lower bill skims the surface in search of fish. Their flight is fast, elegant, and mesmerizing, and capturing it even once is rare.

Through layered digital artistry, painterly textures, and atmospheric lighting, the original photograph evolves into something deeper than documentation.
